Domain Names

In order to have a website you must first have a Domain Name. A domain name is a name that identifies one or more IP addresses; amor Web Design's domain name is amorwebdesign.com

Because the Internet works using IP addresses, not domain names, when a domain name is entered into the address bar on your internet browser it is automatically translated by a Domain Name System (DNS) server into the corresponding IP address.

Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which level domain it belongs to. The 6 main Top Level Domains (TLD) are listed below:

.com - Commercial Business
.net - Network Organisations
.gov - Government Agencies
.edu - Educational Institutions
.org - Organisations (non-profit)
.mil - Military

There are also Country Code Top Level Domains such as:

.uk - United Kingdom
.de - Germany
.fr  -  France
.es - Spain
.ch - Switzerland
.us - United States

At amor Web Design we recommend using the Top Level Domain .com because it is the most recognised domain and does not alienate potential clients from other countries contracting your services.

Ideally your domain name should be based on your business name or service type, and not include hyphens within the main body. For example, amorwebdesign.com is preferable to amor-webdesign.com. The aim is to make your domain name as easily memorable as possible.
